Something quite significant happened on July 7,2026 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta . And outcomes of this meeting are honestly worth paying attention to closely.
Both leaders oversaw signing of 14 agreements during the visit . That number alone tells you how seriously both countries are taking this relationship right now .
Among biggest headlines coming out of Jakarta — India is transferring BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system and Astra Mk-1 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles to Indonesia . These are meant for Indonesia's fleet of Su-30 fighter aircraft . And the exact number of missiles will be worked out through ongoing contract negotiations, but two in-principle contracts have already been signed.
This defense arrangement did not come out of nowhere . Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin had visited India back in November 2025 . That visit laid groundwork for everything that got formalized during Modi's Jakarta trip.
Modi also used the press briefing to clearly restate India's position on Israel-Palestine conflict . He said,"In this period of global turbulence,India believes that role of dialogue and diplomacy has become more important than ever before." India's support for two-state solution was underlined quite firmly.
Few key things from this visit worth noting:
- Modi reiterated India's support for two-state solution to Israel-Palestine conflict, emphasizing dialogue over escalation.
- 14 agreements were signed including defense pacts covering BrahMos missile system and Astra Mk-1 missiles for Indonesia's military.
- Modi received Indonesia's Bintang Adipurna honor, making him only second Indian Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to receive it,Nehru having been honored posthumously in 1995 .
That award moment was genuinely interesting . Modi said,"It reflects the goodwill of the people of Indonesia and stands as a tribute to the historic and enduring bonds of friendship between India and Indonesia." Not small recognition at all.
Both leaders also raised concern over war in West Asia and its implications for global stability . Joint statement released after their talks specifically highlighted necessity for transit passage through Strait of Hormuz to comply with international law, referencing provisions of United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,UNCLOS.
On Indo-Pacific,Modi noted strong alignment between both nations, saying,"There is strong synergy in our respective outlooks on the Indo-Pacific." ASEAN grouping was called out as holding special importance in that context .
Honestly, when you look at everything together — defense transfers,14 agreements, diplomatic alignment on West Asia,Indo-Pacific convergence — this visit was clearly not just routine bilateral meeting . India and Indonesia seem to be moving toward something much deeper in terms of strategic partnership .
But what exactly that partnership looks like in five years, especially given how unstable West Asia situation remains and how contested Indo-Pacific is becoming… that part is still very much unfolding
