So IMD has now issued orange alert for Mumbai on July 21,2026 and honestly,after that unusually long dry spell the city just went through,this escalation was probably coming .
What makes this interesting is how quickly warnings got upgraded . Initially IMD had put out yellow alerts only,but forecasts of moderate to intense rainfall lasting up to three hours pushed authorities to raise it to orange level . Vikram Singh,Chief of IMD Mumbai,indicated that rainfall activity is likely to intensify starting Tuesday . So things are moving fast right now .
And this is not just Mumbai's problem alone . Orange alert has been extended to Pune Ghats,Nashik Ghats,Palghar and Raigad districts as well . All of them were previously under yellow warnings and now all shifted up one level . Not small thing for those areas.

Experts are saying though that this upcoming rainfall probably will not hit extreme levels like first week of July,when over 1,000 mm fell in just few days . That was genuinely extreme by any standard.
For context,July is typically Mumbai's wettest month averaging around 920 mm of rainfall . So monsoon activity right now is somewhat expected,just the intensity and timing after dry spell is what caught attention .
Numbers from last 24 hours before July 21 are also telling . Santacruz weather station recorded 88.4 mm of rainfall while Colaba observatory noted only 5.3 mm . That gap between two stations in same city is honestly always surprising . Temperatures remained relatively mild with Santacruz reporting maximum of 30.2°C and minimum of 24.4°C,while Colaba recorded maximum of 29.8°C and minimum of 26°C .
One genuinely positive development is that lake levels are improving . City's drinking water supply depends heavily on those seven lakes and reserves climbing to 54.05% capacity brings some relief as monsoon season deepens . Last few weeks of dry spell must have created real pressure on those reserves.
But every time orange alert gets issued for Mumbai,same anxiety returns for commuters,daily wage workers,people in low-lying areas… because flooding and waterlogging can completely derail daily life within hours here . IMD is advising residents to stay updated and follow advisories during this period .
