This Audrey Truschke controversy has again turned into one of those history-versus-faith debates where people are not just disagreeing, they are feeling personally attacked also . And honestly, when matter is about Harappan Pashupati seal and Lord Shiva, reactions were always going to be sharp.
American historian Audrey Truschke publicly challenged Indian Ministry of Culture's description of Harappan Pashupati seal, saying it depicts an Eurasian deity rather than Lord Shiva . That one claim has now angered Hindu seers, especially in Ayodhya.
Speaking to IANS,Mahant Sitaram Das Maharaj strongly objected to her comments and called it unacceptable attack on India's historical narrative . His words were very direct: “If international agencies will try to harm the history of India,it will not be tolerated at any cost.”
He also said seal was found at Mohenjo-daro and is estimated to be around 4,300 years old . According to him,it clearly represents Shiva-Pashupati . For many Hindu leaders, this is not just academic debate ah,this is about India's Sanatan tradition and how outside voices interpret it.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Audrey Truschke described figure as more connected to an Eurasian deity than Lord Shiva.
- Mahant Sitaram Das demanded apology and said attempt to harm India's history will not be tolerated.
- Hindu seers are defending Pashupati seal as symbol of India's Sanatan tradition .
Ministry of Culture had earlier posted about seal on social media and described it as important artifact from India's ancient traditions . The post said,“This steatite seal shows a seated figure in yogic posture, widely seen as Shiva-Pashupati,surrounded by animals.”
But Truschke pushed back, saying figure is more aligned with proto-Elamite iconography . And tbh, this is where debate becomes very sensitive, because historians may look at symbols one way,but communities connected to those symbols feel something totally different .
Mahant Deveshacharya Ji Maharaj also raised concern and suggested there is deliberate effort to tarnish India's image internationally . He even remarked,“America is angry with India,” linking such criticism to broader geopolitical mood.
And this is why whole issue is not cooling down easily . One side sees scholarship and alternate reading of ancient artifact, other side sees distortion of faith, culture and history . Where exactly line should be drawn between study and insult… that question is still hanging .
