So looks like some major changes are coming to Haryana's power sector . They are talking about bringing in smart meters for everyone, starting August 31,2026 . Big move ah.
This all came out from review meeting headed by Union Minister Manohar Lal . He seems very clear that this needs to be done in phases, not all at once.
And rollout plan is actually quite strategic . They will first target government consumers and high-load users . So not the common household immediately, but big players first. This makes some sense, start with places where consumption is highest .
Honestly, the bigger point here is how minister is looking at electricity itself . He said it must be treated as an "economic good",and that utilities need to use "sound commercial principles". This is a big shift in thinking for government departments .
Basically,he's telling the power distribution companies (DISCOMs) to get their finances in order . Reduce the cost of buying power, rationalize their own spending, and increase revenue. Easier said than done for sure.
Few key things from this whole announcement:
- Smart meter rollout will be phased, starting with government and high-end users.
- Big push for power companies to become financially sustainable and act like businesses.
- An automated payment system is also planned to make sure dues are settled on time .
And it's not just about meters . The minister also talked about other things like Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and making sure there's enough power capacity for future demand.
They also reviewed the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana . Minister Manohar Lal specifically told officials to make a plan to get more consumers signed up for it . So at same time, there is a push to help residents with their power costs too .
Haryana Minister Anil Vij was also there and he gave his assurance that the state will do whatever is needed to make all this successful .
But you know how these big government plans are . On paper,it sounds great – more efficiency, better finances, help for consumers . But implementation is everything, and getting old systems to change is always the hardest part…
