In a significant move towards digital governance, the Gujarat government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Meta to deliver government services through WhatsApp. The agreement was formalized in Gandhinagar, with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel present at the signing. This innovative initiative is designed to enhance the accessibility of government services for citizens, providing them with a streamlined method to access vital information and services from the comfort of their homes.
Under this new collaboration, a range of approximately 20 citizen-centric services will be integrated into the WhatsApp platform. These services, linked to five major departments, will initially include options such as grievance redressal, income certificates, caste certificates, and updates for ration cards. The government aims to simplify the process for citizens by allowing them to engage with services in both Gujarati and English, thereby broadening the reach of digital governance.
- Alignment with National Vision — This initiative reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of 'Nagrik Devo Bhava', aiming to enhance citizen engagement through technology.
- Improved Accessibility — Citizens will be able to access services through a single WhatsApp number, significantly reducing the need for physical visits to government offices.
- Phased Implementation — More government services are expected to be added gradually, ensuring a comprehensive digital governance framework.
Officials emphasized that this initiative is a step forward in moving from 'One Day Governance' to 'WhatsApp Governance', significantly improving the last-mile delivery of public services. By enabling real-time tracking of applications and services, the government aims to enhance transparency and accountability in service delivery.
This collaboration with Meta follows recommendations made by the Gujarat Administrative Reforms Commission (GARC) and is part of Chief Minister Patel's broader efforts to expand digital governance across the state. Previous initiatives have already demonstrated success in delivering services through Jan Seva Kendras and Village Computer Entrepreneur systems, indicating a strong foundation for this new WhatsApp-based approach.
