The European Union (EU) summoned Russia's charge d'affaires on May 26 after Moscow issued alarming warnings of potential strikes targeting the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. During a press briefing, Anitta Hipper, spokesperson for EU foreign affairs, labeled Russia's statements as "unacceptable". This development follows a series of attacks by Russian armed forces, which they described as systematic strikes on military-industrial facilities in Kyiv, citing a recent Ukrainian drone attack in Starobelsk as justification.
According to reports from the Xinhua news agency, the drone strike in Starobelsk resulted in the tragic loss of 21 lives, with over 60 individuals injured, including numerous children. In light of these events, Russia's Foreign Ministry urged foreign nationals, including diplomats and international organization staff, to evacuate Kyiv immediately. They also advised local residents to steer clear of military and administrative sites in the capital, raising concerns about civilian safety.
- EU's continued presence in Kyiv — Despite Russia's threats, the EU aims to maintain its operations and support for Ukraine.
- Informal meeting in Cyprus — EU foreign ministers plan to discuss strategies to intensify international pressure on Russia.
- Norway protests Russia's actions — Norway's Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to express discontent over threats against foreign personnel.
Hipper reiterated the EU's commitment to supporting Ukraine, emphasizing the need for enhanced air defense systems and financial assistance. As tensions escalate, the EU’s focus remains on coordinating a unified response to Russia’s aggressive actions.
In addition to the EU's actions, Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russian Ambassador Nikolay Korchunov for discussions regarding the threats posed to foreign personnel in Ukraine. Espen Barth Eide, Norway's Foreign Minister, stated that the meeting was necessary to address the alarming rhetoric emanating from Moscow. The backdrop of these events highlights the deteriorating security situation in Ukraine and the growing international response to Russia's military operations.
