Economic Survey 2025-26 has come with one pretty positive message on jobs, but honestly, story is not fully comfortable once gig workers part comes in . Presented in Parliament on January 29,2026,it says India's unemployment rates have seen substantial decline, and yes, that is big thing ah.
Survey links this improvement to structural reforms, tax rationalization and stronger focus on skill development . Based on findings from Periodic Labour Force Survey,it suggests job growth is getting support across industries because of these changes .
But at same time, gig economy section feels like warning bell only . Delivery services,ride-sharing,freelancing… these jobs are growing fast, but people doing them are still facing unstable income and very limited access to financial inclusion.
Numbers are actually sharp here . Gig workers are now over 2% of India's workforce, and their count has gone from 77 lakh workers in 2020-21 to 120 lakh by 2024-25 . That is not small jump at all.
Few things standing out clearly in survey:
- Gig economy workforce has surged with smartphone penetration and increased digital transactions, and now contributes ₹2.35 lakh crore to GDP.
- Approximately 40% of gig workers earn below ₹15,000 per month, showing serious financial insecurity.
- Platform algorithms can create unfair work allocation and monitoring, which makes worker vulnerability worse .
And tbh, this is where whole “new age work” excitement becomes little complicated . Flexibility sounds nice from outside, but if income keeps changing every month and app decides who gets work, then worker is not really in strong position.
Survey also talks about Labour Codes and says they are expected to improve job security and formal employment opportunities, especially for women and gig workers . That part sounds promising, but real test will be how much of this reaches people on ground.
There is also push for formalization inside gig sector,so informal jobs can come under more structured system with better security and benefits . Technology is clearly changing work structure, but same technology is also creating problems through algorithmic decision-making that may affect earnings and job stability .
So yes, unemployment decline is good news, and government will definitely highlight that . But question still stays there quietly… if jobs are increasing, but large number of workers are earning below ₹15,000 and depending on platforms they cannot question, then how secure is this new employment story really…
