The Delhi Khel Mahakumbh, a significant sports event aimed at promoting youth engagement in sports, is set to commence on February 13, 2026. Announced by Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood, this initiative reflects the government's commitment to revitalize sports in the national capital. The event will kick off with the inauguration by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and it is expected to attract over 20,000 participants across several disciplines, including kabaddi, football, athletics, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, and squash.
During a press conference, Minister Sood highlighted the government's decision to significantly increase the sports and youth affairs budget from ₹26 crore to ₹76 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. This threefold increase marks a shift in policy aimed at reversing years of declining allocations that previously hampered the development of sports infrastructure and activities in Delhi.
- Seven disciplines featured — The event will include kabaddi, football, athletics, and more.
- Budget increase to ₹76 crore — Aimed at enhancing sports infrastructure and facilities.
- Wider participation across Delhi — Events to be held in various locations to ensure inclusivity.
Minister Sood also noted that previous administrations had limited Delhi's involvement in national sports programs, often treating these activities as mere formalities. The Delhi Khel Mahakumbh is designed to empower young athletes by providing them with platforms to showcase their talents and compete at higher levels. The month-long tournament will take place in various areas, including Bawana, Vikaspuri, and Najafgarh, ensuring that youth from all corners of the city can participate.
The event will also feature prize money for both team and individual events, further incentivizing participation. The unveiling of the official mascot, 'Ranveer,' symbolizes youth energy and sportsmanship, encapsulating the spirit of the competition. This initiative is poised not only to revive interest in sports among the youth but also to foster a sense of community and sportsmanship across Delhi.
