On May 30 ,Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge conveyed greetings to citizens of Daman and Diu and spoke about cultural diversity and harmony there .
Kharge shared message on X saying,"Warm greetings to the people of Daman and Diu on their Foundation Day. rich cultural diversity and spirit of harmony shared by people of Daman and Diu continue to strengthen nation’s unity, progress, and collective prosperity."
And yes, that line about harmony is not just standard wording ah . Daman and Diu actually carry mix of Indian and Portuguese influences, from buildings to traditions, and that identity did not appear overnight.
Indian National Congress also joined celebrations through social media . Party praised region’s heritage and contribution to India’s development, and said,"We honour its vibrant heritage, diversity and contribution to the nation, while reaffirming our commitment to inclusive development."
Few things standing out here:
- Daman and Diu were incorporated into India in 1961 after 'Operation Vijay',ending over four centuries of Portuguese colonial rule.
- Region still shows Indian and Portuguese influence through architecture, traditions, forts and churches.
- Tourism, fisheries and small-scale industries remain major parts of local economy.
And tbh, this is where history makes today’s greetings feel heavier . Once Portuguese colony,Daman and Diu became part of Indian Union in 1961,then later were administered as Union Territory along with Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
In 2020 , these territories were merged into single entity for administrative efficiency . That sounds very official, but for people living there,it also means identity, governance and local development getting tied together in new way.
Daman,on coast of Gujarat,is known for beaches and colonial architecture . Diu,an island off Kathiawar coast,is known for historic forts and churches . Places like Diu Fort,Naida Caves, and Church of St. Paul keep pulling visitors year after year .
And at same time, region is not just tourist postcard . Its coastal economy, maritime history and mixed cultural memory all sit together in one small place, which is why these Foundation Day messages feel simple on surface but carry lot more underneath…
