Something quite unexpected has come out of West Bengal politics where Congress president Subhankar Sarkar has officially invited Mamata Banerjee to attend their Martyrs' Day event on July 21 in Kolkata . And the condition attached to this invitation is making whole thing very interesting to watch .
Sarkar made this announcement during press briefing at Shahid Minar where he was reviewing preparations for the upcoming event . But he did not just invite her politely . He actually urged Mamata Banerjee to acknowledge that leaving Congress nearly three decades ago was a "mistake."
His exact words were pretty direct honestly . Sarkar stated,"If Mamata Banerjee truly possesses the courage,she should not distort history. She must admit that her political decision to leave the Congress was incorrect." That is not small statement to make publicly against someone of her stature .
Now for some context . July 21,1993 movement holds very deep significance in West Bengal political history . That day saw police violence against Youth Congress members which resulted in deaths of 13 individuals . Congress considers this date as important part of their legacy and Sarkar clearly does not want that history rewritten or claimed by others.
Few things standing out clearly in this situation:
- Sarkar invited Banerjee to Shahid Minar stage and said Congress platform is open to everyone who wishes to pay homage to July 21 martyrs .
- Mamata Banerjee left Congress in December 1997 to form Trinamool Congress and has been marking July 21 with large rallies ever since .
- TMC is now facing internal dissent with faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee planning separate observance,and police have denied permission for traditional events at Victoria House .
Sarkar also went further and said,"If she were to publicly declare that leaving the Congress was a mistake and come to Shahid Minar stage to pay homage to the July 21 martyrs,it would demonstrate an effort to rectify some of the past errors. The Congress stage is open to everyone,and she is welcome to pay her respects." Genuinely unusual thing to say publicly . Like an open challenge dressed up as invitation.
And honestly,this whole move from Congress side feels calculated . TMC is not in same strong position right now that it used to be . Assembly election results have not been kind and internal cracks are becoming visible . Congress seems to sense that moment.
The demand for public atonement from Mamata Banerjee is something she is extremely unlikely to agree to . Her entire political identity for last twenty-seven years has been built on that very departure from Congress . Asking her to call it mistake is basically asking her to question foundation of her own party's existence.
At same time watching TMC deal with dissent internally while Congress makes these public gestures is interesting shift in political dynamics of Bengal . For long time Congress was almost irrelevant there . Whether this invitation is genuine reconciliation attempt or just political pressure tactic… that part is still not fully clear.
And what happens on July 21 this year,with two separate observances possibly happening,court matter still unresolved and Mamata almost certainly not going to Shahid Minar stage… that is going to tell lot about where Bengal politics is actually heading right now
