So apparently a single Instagram story posted by an MP's daughter has managed to set off a genuine political firestorm inside the BJP in Odisha. And the more details that come out about this whole situation, the more interesting it gets.
The post in question came from Archita Sachin Rahar, daughter of Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi. Her Instagram story featured a photograph of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alongside the national flag, with the caption, "Dharmendra Pradhan resigns amid massive student protests over NEET leak fiasco." That was enough to trigger serious disapproval from BJP members across Odisha who felt the timing and tone were completely wrong.
And honestly, you can see why it created such a mess. Pradhan is a prominent figure, and party members clearly felt that a sitting MP's daughter publicly framing his resignation this way was not a small thing.
But here is where it gets really interesting. Archita reportedly refused when her mother asked her to take the post down. She wasn't just passively standing by her words either. She followed it up with another post that directly addressed the pressure being applied, writing, "Also, to DP's PA who is sure to text my mother asking me to delete my previous story (it has happened before) — Don't bother. I won't delete. Jai Jagannath! Jai Hind."
That line alone tells you so much about what was happening behind the scenes.
Aparajita Sarangi's office did try to soften the situation. Her assistant Dhaneswar Barik explained publicly, "Everyone has the right to express their views. Her daughter, who is from Gen Z, said she stands by her statement. She has the right to speak her mind." Sarangi herself later publicly supported Pradhan, emphasizing the courage it takes to resign for moral reasons.
Three things stand out clearly here:
- BJP members in Odisha expressed open disappointment over Archita's comments and called for greater discipline within the party.
- Archita directly called out attempts to pressure her through her mother, suggesting this kind of behind-the-scenes communication had happened before.
- Jagannath Pradhan, a BJP candidate who lost in the 2024 Bhubaneswar Central Assembly elections, publicly stated that "Sarangi should have control over her family members. She should tender an apology to Odisha for her daughter making adverse remarks against Pradhan."
That last point is worth sitting with for a moment. The expectation that a sitting MP should be able to control what her adult daughter says on social media, and that failing to do so requires a public apology, says a lot about how political parties think about family loyalty and personal opinion.
Archita is clearly not backing down, and the debate her posts sparked online shows she has supporters on that side too. Meanwhile, the party has a real tension to manage between maintaining unity and acknowledging that people, even those connected to senior politicians, have personal views.
What happens to Sarangi's political standing inside the BJP because of all this is genuinely unclear right now. Does she face any real consequences? Does Archita's visible independence actually help or hurt her mother's image with ordinary voters?
That part is still playing out, and it is hard to say which direction it lands.
