In response to a fire incident that occurred on October 4, which destroyed 12 CNG midi buses at the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking’s Anik depot, new safety measures have been implemented. The fire broke out around 5:45 PM and was extinguished by approximately 7:15 PM. The investigation revealed that the buses were parked too closely, with only one to one-and-a-half feet apart, which allowed flames to spread rapidly from one vehicle to another.
In light of this incident, BEST has mandated that a minimum distance of two feet be maintained between parked buses in all depots. Additionally, buses must now be positioned facing the exit to ensure they can be quickly evacuated in emergencies. This change aims to enhance safety protocols and prevent similar incidents in the future, particularly as the transport body reviews its emergency response strategies.
The fire incident has also raised significant concerns regarding the adequacy of existing firefighting infrastructure at BEST depots. Trishna Vishwasrao, the chairperson of the BEST committee, has called upon the Mumbai civic administration to provide round-the-clock firefighting facilities to enhance safety measures. Currently, there is scrutiny over the capability of staff to respond swiftly during emergencies, as the incident highlighted the challenges faced while locating vehicle keys for evacuation.
- New parking guidelines — mandates a two-foot gap between parked buses for safety.
- Emergency preparedness concerns — highlighted by delays in evacuating buses during the fire.
- Call for improved firefighting infrastructure — demands for 24/7 firefighting facilities at depots.
As investigations into the fire continue, potential causes are being explored, including smoking materials and other flammable items. The recent incident has intensified discussions around fire safety standards and emergency response systems within public transport depots. The measures being taken by BEST reflect a commitment to improving safety protocols and safeguarding vehicles against future fire hazards, ensuring that both staff and passengers are protected.
