The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia disclosed on September 18 that the BCCI contributes around ₹3,000 crore annually to the government in income tax, challenging the widespread belief that the board operates under tax exemptions. This revelation comes amid ongoing debates regarding the National Sports Governance Act, which has raised questions about the financial obligations of various sports bodies in India.
Saikia's comments aim to clarify the BCCI's stance on its financial responsibilities, especially as other sports organizations receive government grants. He stated that regarding the Sports Act, the BCCI's stand is very clear and that there are a lot of things which have to be done by the concerned authority, referring to the processes necessary for the BCCI to be officially recognized under the Sports Act.
- Enhanced Umpire Compensation — The BCCI has approved a new payment structure for umpires, which will include merit-based assessments and a promotional system.
- Promotion-Relegation System — A new grading system for umpires will allow for performance-based promotions and demotions, enhancing accountability.
- No Venue Change for BGT — Saikia confirmed there are no current plans to shift the venue of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match from Ranchi.
In addition to tax discussions, the BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM) approved a revised payment structure for umpires, introducing a merit-based grading system. This system will classify umpires into four grades: A, B, C, and D, with performance evaluations determining their assignments for significant matches. Saikia noted that this new structure aims to ensure that umpires remain alert and accountable throughout the season.
Furthermore, Saikia addressed rumors regarding the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match, stating, “When is the Ranchi Test? February (19). There are still six-seven months left. We will take a call at the appropriate time.” He reiterated that there are currently no requests to change the venue from Ranchi, dispelling any speculation regarding the location of this highly anticipated match.
