This monsoon season, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the Andheri subway was shut down 24 times due to flooding, which resulted in a total of 39 hours of lost access for commuters. The flooding incidents saw water levels rising to a staggering 5.5 feet, leading to significant disruptions in local traffic and public transport.
The longest closure occurred on July 4, where the subway remained inaccessible for an extensive period of 8 hours and 40 minutes. While the frequency of closures has decreased from the previous year’s 33 closures in 2025, the BMC acknowledges that further improvements are necessary to ensure the subway remains operational during heavy rainfall.
- 24 closures recorded — Andheri subway shut down 24 times this monsoon due to flooding.
- 39 hours of downtime — Total time lost due to flooding incidents.
- Solutions anticipated in 2-3 years — Permanent fixes to the flooding issue expected to take time.
The BMC is currently exploring various strategies to mitigate the flooding problem. However, officials have indicated that implementing a permanent solution could take between two to three years. As the city continues to face challenges with monsoon rains, the focus remains on improving infrastructure to better handle extreme weather conditions.
Local residents have expressed concerns over the repeated subway closures, citing the impact on daily commutes and transportation. The BMC has assured that they are prioritizing the issue and are committed to finding effective solutions to prevent future disruptions caused by flooding.
