Something very serious almost happened at Mumbai airport on the night of July 7,2026 . And when you understand exactly what unfolded on that runway,it genuinely makes you stop and think.
Around 10 PM,an Air India Express flight arriving from Siliguri had not yet cleared runway . At the same time,Air India flight AI816 was already preparing for take-off toward Delhi . Two aircraft on same runway at same time — not small situation at all.
What makes this even more striking is the aircraft involved . AI816 was operating on wide-body Boeing 777-300ER,which is significant aircraft especially for domestic route . Meanwhile the Air India Express flight was narrow-body Boeing 737 MAX 8 . Different sizes, same runway, same moment.
Honestly, this is where air traffic control stepped in and possibly prevented something catastrophic.
Controllers intervened quickly and instructed AI816 crew to abort take-off run . And to their credit, crew responded immediately . As Air India spokesperson later confirmed — "The crew operating flight AI816 from Mumbai to Delhi discontinued the take-off run after receiving an instruction to do so from Air Traffic Control and returned to the bay."
Few things worth noting clearly here:
- Air traffic controllers intervened and guided AI816 to abort take-off before any collision could occur.
- Aircraft will now undergo checks as per standard safety protocols to confirm no issues remain.
- Air India is arranging alternative flights so passengers reach their destination without significant delay.
Airline has not disclosed exact number of passengers aboard either flight . But honestly,at 10 PM on busy Mumbai airport route to Delhi, that Boeing 777-300ER would not have been carrying few people.
Aviation sector in India has already been under scrutiny for various incidents over recent years . This kind of near-miss situation at one of country's busiest airports only adds to that conversation . Runway management, coordination between arriving and departing aircraft, timing of clearances… these are not minor operational details.
Investigation is continuing right now and experts will likely evaluate whether current procedures are working well enough to prevent these situations from repeating .
But one question stays uncomfortable — if air traffic control had reacted even slightly slower,or if crew had hesitated even for few seconds, what would outcome have been on that runway…
