Not simple notice story only, because timing itself is making people talk .
Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress,is set to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on June 1 in connection with ongoing investigation into discrepancies involving signatures of party legislators . This is about mismatches in signatures on resolution nominating party leaders.
Things picked up more attention after CID team went to his residence in South Kolkata on May 30 . But during that visit, officials were reportedly told that Banerjee had not been present at home for several days . At that time,he was said to be at residence of party colleague,Kunal Ghosh,in North Kolkata.
After that,CID served notice at Banerjee's Kalighat residence, asking him to appear at CID headquarters . Banerjee has confirmed receiving notice and said he will cooperate after taking legal advice.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Abhishek Banerjee has been asked to appear before CID on June 1.
- Inquiry is linked to mismatches in signatures on resolution nominating party leaders.
- Banerjee said he will cooperate, but also made it clear he will not be intimidated.
And tbh,his response was not soft at all . He said,“After taking legal advice in the matter,I will extend all cooperation. But I will never bow down. If they wish, they can arrest me,” which shows he is treating this as both legal and political fight.
The investigation revolves around resolution submitted to West Bengal Assembly, which nominated Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition, along with two deputy leaders and the Chief Whip . CID scrutiny started after discrepancies were noticed in signatures of some Trinamool Congress legislators.
But background makes whole thing more sensitive ah . This is happening after assembly election results on May 4,which ended Trinamool Congress’s 15-year governance . Since then,Banerjee had remained relatively low-profile and only recently came out to meet party workers affected by post-poll violence.
And that is why this notice is not being seen in isolation . In Bengal politics, nothing stays only legal for long… especially when elections, party positions, signature disputes and police inquiry all come together at same time . What happens on June 1 may decide how much bigger this fight becomes…
