Key Takeaways

  • AAP leads with 178 wards in Punjab elections
  • Polling day marred by clashes and violence
  • High voter turnout indicates strong civic engagement

Punjab Urban Local Body election counting has started showing one very clear early signal, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will be feeling pretty confident right now . For party, this is not just local body result,it is kind of public mood check before Assembly elections in early 2027.

As of 11 A.M.,AAP has won 178 wards, while Congress has secured 58 wards and Sriromani Akali Dal (SAD) has secured 53 wards . These are early stages of vote count, but still, numbers are giving AAP strong push against main opposition parties.

These elections were held on May 26 for 102 civic bodies, including eight municipal corporations,75 municipal councils, and 19 nagar panchayats . Total fight was across 1,897 wards,so this is not small local election ah .

And voter turnout was also pretty high at 63.94% . In nagar panchayats,it went up to 76.18%,which shows people came out seriously to vote, especially in smaller civic areas .

Candidate numbers also show how big this whole contest was . Total 7,554 candidates were in fray, with AAP fielding 1,801 candidates,Congress 1,550,BJP 1,316,SAD 1,251,and 96 from BSP,along with many Independents.

Few things standing out clearly in this election:

  • As of 11 A.M.,AAP has won 178 wards,Congress 58,and Sriromani Akali Dal (SAD) 53 .
  • Voter turnout was 63.94%,with nagar panchayats recording 76.18%.
  • Clashes and violence allegations came from places involving AAP,Congress and SAD supporters.

But tbh,the voting day itself does not sound peaceful at all . Reports of clashes, booth capturing allegations and fights between party supporters came from different places, which again raises questions about law and order during elections .

In Raikot,Congress candidate Jagdev Singh Jagga was reportedly attacked with sharp weapons . In Barnala, husband of a BJP candidate was assaulted after he protested against suspected bogus voting . And in Gidderbaha, there were altercations between AAP and SAD supporters.

State Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring condemned these incidents and criticized AAP government over deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab . And honestly, when local polls start seeing this kind of violence,it becomes bigger issue than just who won how many wards .

Counting is still being watched closely because these results may shape political confidence before early 2027 . AAP may be ahead rn,but violence claims and booth capturing allegations are also hanging over this election…
